Myth Busting: Is Custom Jewelry More Expensive?

Sunday, June 12th, 2016

2016, Tami Slogan, Wall Poster

For your next fine jewelry purchase, if you want a truly unique piece that tells the world something special about you or the person you’re buying for, consider custom design. There’s a well-trafficked myth in the jewelry industry that says custom design must always be more expensive than manufactured pieces. Ignore it. Because it’s just that; a myth. Custom design can be much less costly than you think.

Here’s the thing: custom design actually can be more expensive. But, it doesn’t have to be. That’s all the more reason why the right jeweler matters so much. Your choice of jeweler makes all the difference in two very key areas: the beauty of your piece and cost of your piece.

Direct your search to lead you to a jeweler noted for excellence in both design and price. Take a look at their featured collections to make sure that he or she designs with the sort of flair and details that appeal to you. And – most importantly – find out what previous customers are saying about them.

One smart and highly-reviewed choice is the Diamond and Jewelry Gallery Studio City, voted “Favorite Jewelry Store” by the L.A. Daily News. In business for more than 40 years, they offer one of L.A’s largest selections of certified diamonds, with discounts often at 50-75% below retail. As the exclusive home of the Signature “Johnny N” Designer Line – and – known as the “engagement ring superstore,” the Diamond and Jewelry Gallery Studio City showroom offers clients 1000s of stunning showcase choices. But, for those looking for something truly special, their reputation as custom design specialists has made them a sort of go-to hub for those who want true masterpiece design at surprisingly affordable prices. In fact, customer referrals are their number one form of business. Here’s why:

#1. They Skip The Middleman. You Save. Being a direct diamond importer means that they are skilled and experienced enough to scout, source and hand select diamonds themselves as opposed to buying them from a middleman. That also means that they can pass those savings onto you. Typically, custom design work can cost up to three times more than manufactured pieces, but, the Diamond and Jewelry Gallery Studio City offers certified diamonds, precious gemstones and custom design labor services to clients for 50-75% below retail pricing.

#2. Expert Work Takes Less Time. You Save. Depending on the intricacy of the piece and the expertise of the Jeweler creating it, a beautifully-designed piece can take anywhere from one week to six weeks to complete. The expert team at Diamond and Jewelry Gallery Studio City uses their more than 40 years of design experience to cut down that time and pass the labor savings directly on to you.

#3. They Put You In the Driver’s Seat. You Save. Some say custom design is risky because you will not see or have access to the piece to make changes before the final outcome. At the Diamond and Jewelry Gallery Studio City, the designers work with you during each phase of design to make sure it meets your approval before completing the finished piece, including wax mock-ups, length adjustments and re-sizing, when appropriate. It’s not all about the nickels and dimes. Staying in control also saves you from the headache of worrying about the final outcome of your piece!

Check out a few experiences from Diamond and Jewelry Gallery Studio City customers:

September Birthstone: Precious Blue Sapphire

Sunday, August 23rd, 2015

The richly blue Sapphire is the birthstone of those fortunate enough to be born in September. Giving gifts of jewelry in signature birthstone gems is an age old tradition. Have you ever wondered when it started?

As far as we can tell, the first century Jewish historian Josephus introduced the idea of an association between the twelve stones in Aaron’s breastplate and the twelve months of the year and their zodiac signs. Also, in the eighth and ninth century, Christian religious documents associating a particular gemstone with an apostle were written as a nod to the book of Revelation reference that “their name would be inscribed on the Foundation Stones, and his virtue.” Eventually, it became common to keep twelve stones and wear one a month. The tradition of wearing only a single birthstone, as is commonly done today, is thought to be only a few centuries old, and now is more a matter of aesthetics as opposed to anything with religious overtones.

No matter your birthstone, whether it’s a diamond, a pearl or an amethyst – be sure to wear it with pride, flair and style. Here’s a bit about the September birthstone – beautifully intense Sapphire.

SAPPHIRE – ONE OF THE “PRECIOUS FOUR”

Magnificent sapphire gemstones are most prized for their beautiful hues of dark blue. However, this exquisite stone comes in a rainbow of other colors, including yellow, pink, orange and purple. The lovely blue color of the sapphire is associated with feelings of sympathy and harmony, friendship and loyalty. Sapphires are one of the “precious four,” a set of highly valuable gemstones that includes diamonds, rubies and emeralds.

AUGUST BIRTHSTONES: The Quiet Beauties

Saturday, August 22nd, 2015

Many people today collect pieces of jewelry in the stone of their birth month — a set of gems commonly referred to as “birthstones.” In popular culture, men and women alike wear signature birthstone jewelry with a degree of sentimentality and pride. Birthstone jewels are often given as presents to children; or as gifts to spouses or parents to commemorate milestone events.

Wearing birthstone jewelry can be as creative and unique as its wearer. For example, a thoughtful husband might gift his wife a necklace or pendant featuring the birthstone of each member of their growing family. Or, for a fun way to brag about their brood, some mothers have custom eternity rings created in the birthstone of each new child and then stack them for an elegantly colorful look.

For those with delightful Summer birthdays or milestone events in August, the birthstone of the month is Peridot. Here’s a little bit about this quiet and often under-appreciated beauty.

PERIDOT: The modern stone for August is the lovely peridot, a gemstone that ranges in color from yellowish green to brown. Arguably, the most popular peridots are those that present in bright, fresh lime greens and olive toned variations. Perhaps inspired by peridot’s calming color, the stone’s properties are thought to provide benefits including healing, stress reduction, anti-aging and protection.

Another August stone is SARDONYX. Though it is not as widely known or recognized, it is actually the traditional stone for August. Sardonyx is an agate ribboned with unusual red, orange, brown and white stripes. Ancient Egyptians, Greeks and Romans believed sardonyx would bring courage and victory to the wearer.
