TRENDS: Colored Stone Engagement Ring

Monday, October 1st, 2018

No matter the season – the soaring, sun-soaked skies of Summer or the brisk and oh so chilly breezes of Fall and Winter – it’s always proposal time for someone somewhere. So, today, we look at another of this year’s most popular engagement ring trends: “The Colored Stone Ring.”

Just as multi-stone, rose gold and band-like engagement rings are currently trending, fine jewelers are also experiencing growing requests for colored stones in place of the classic Diamond center stone. To follow this trend, consider choosing your birthstone as your center stone, or opt for vivid, deeply hued stones like Sapphires, Emeralds, Tourmalines or Rubies.

You can play with the colored center stone trend by choosing your favorite gem and then accenting it with Diamond halos or side stones to set off its richness and intensity. Or, you can play it a bit more safely by choosing a beautiful Diamond as your center stone and then accenting it with your birthstone or other colorful gems as side stones or a decorative halo. Fancy Yellow Diamonds are also an elegant and timeless way to try this trend.

No matter your choice for an engagement ring, the point is to find – or design – something that you truly love. With an experienced custom designer to assist you, you can confidently buck tradition knowing that your finished ring will be a beautiful masterpiece that’s just as unique as you are.

If you’re currently in the market for your dream engagement ring, consider visiting the experts at the Diamond and Jewelry Gallery Studio City, voted “Favorite Jewelry Store” with 50-75% off retail pricing daily and customer referrals as their number one form of business. GRAB THE RAINBOW: OPAL IS THE OCTOBER BIRTHSTONE

Fall signifies its arrival with a change in the color of leaves and foliage – making for rich displays of color. So, is the case for the Opal – the gemstone of those with fall birthdays in the month of October.

Beautiful Opals come in a varied “rainbow” of colors, from milky white to mysterious, fire-streaked blue and black stones. The Black Opal is most rare –often rivalling the diamond in pricing.  Next in importance is White Opal, which is characterized by a lighter body color such as white, yellow or cream in addition to unique color plays. Other types of sought after stones include the Fire Opal, or Mexican Fire Opal, which is a transparent to translucent deep orange-red stone. Fire Opal can also feature unusual plays of color – a rarity that when it occurs, results in the stone being called a Precious Fire Opal.

A Black Opal Stone

The name opal is derived from the Greek word Opallos, which means “to see a change (of color).” It is often associated faithfulness, protection and loyalty. The opal stone is also believed to enhance one’s vision as well as creativity.

The alluring Opal is most often used as a stunning center stone for rings, pendants and cabochons.

September Birthstone: Precious Blue Sapphire

Sunday, August 23rd, 2015

2015, Diamond and Jewelry Gallery, pic, loose sapphire

The richly blue Sapphire is the birthstone of those fortunate enough to be born in September. Giving gifts of jewelry in signature birthstone gems is an age old tradition. Have you ever wondered when it started?

As far as we can tell, the first century Jewish historian Josephus introduced the idea of an association between the twelve stones in Aaron’s breastplate and the twelve months of the year and their zodiac signs. Also, in the eighth and ninth century, Christian religious documents associating a particular gemstone with an apostle were written as a nod to the book of Revelation reference that “their name would be inscribed on the Foundation Stones, and his virtue.” Eventually, it became common to keep twelve stones and wear one a month. The tradition of wearing only a single birthstone, as is commonly done today, is thought to be only a few centuries old, and now is more a matter of aesthetics as opposed to anything with religious overtones.

No matter your birthstone, whether it’s a diamond, a pearl or an amethyst – be sure to wear it with pride, flair and style. Here’s a bit about the September birthstone – beautifully intense Sapphire.

SAPPHIRE – ONE OF THE “PRECIOUS FOUR”

Magnificent sapphire gemstones are most prized for their beautiful hues of dark blue. However, this exquisite stone comes in a rainbow of other colors, including yellow, pink, orange and purple. The lovely blue color of the sapphire is associated with feelings of sympathy and harmony, friendship and loyalty. Sapphires are one of the “precious four,” a set of highly valuable gemstones that includes diamonds, rubies and emeralds.

AUGUST BIRTHSTONES: The Quiet Beauties

Saturday, August 22nd, 2015

2015, Diamond and Jewelry Gallery, August Peridot, Tami Slogan

Many people today collect pieces of jewelry in the stone of their birth month — a set of gems commonly referred to as “birthstones.” In popular culture, men and women alike wear signature birthstone jewelry with a degree of sentimentality and pride. Birthstone jewels are often given as presents to children; or as gifts to spouses or parents to commemorate milestone events.

Wearing birthstone jewelry can be as creative and unique as its wearer. For example, a thoughtful husband might gift his wife a necklace or pendant featuring the birthstone of each member of their growing family. Or, for a fun way to brag about their brood, some mothers have custom eternity rings created in the birthstone of each new child and then stack them for an elegantly colorful look.

For those with delightful Summer birthdays or milestone events in August, the birthstone of the month is Peridot. Here’s a little bit about this quiet and often under-appreciated beauty.

2015, Diamond and Jewelry Gallery, pic, Loose peridot stone, August birthstone

PERIDOT: The modern stone for August is the lovely peridot, a gemstone that ranges in color from yellowish green to brown. Arguably, the most popular peridots are those that present in bright, fresh lime greens and olive toned variations. Perhaps inspired by peridot’s calming color, the stone’s properties are thought to provide benefits including healing, stress reduction, anti-aging and protection.

Another August stone is SARDONYX. Though it is not as widely known or recognized, it is actually the traditional stone for August. Sardonyx is an agate ribboned with unusual red, orange, brown and white stripes. Ancient Egyptians, Greeks and Romans believed sardonyx would bring courage and victory to the wearer.

Often said to be the most magnificent of all gemstones, the ruby holds fire red prominence as one of the most sought after and highly regarded stones. The Meaning of Rubies

Throughout history, the ruby has been highly regarded by multiple cultures. For many, it was symbolic of power, passion and protection. THE ENVIABLE EMERALD

Tuesday, May 12th, 2015

2014, diamond and jewelry gallery, pic, emerald double drape necklace, approved

For those lucky enough to be born in May, the envy-inspiring emerald is their official birthstone. However, stunning emeralds are not just for May babies. Throughout history, this precious green gemstone has been sought by both royals and common folk, alike. In fact, the deep and richly-colored green beauties have reigned as one of the world’s most desirable gemstones for centuries.

The emerald is considered the most precious and valuable gem of the beryl family of stones. For admirers of the storied gem, the allure of the emerald is all about the color, color, color. Emeralds are prized – and often revered – for their intensely brilliant green color ranging in hues from yellow greens to bluish greens to intense dark greens. The stones have often thought to be “magical” because of their tendency toward an almost mystical radiance. The deep green glimmer of the emerald is unmatched in the world of gemstones and is considered among the “precious four,” a short list of high-end gemstones that also includes the diamond, rubies and sapphires.

The Meaning of Emeralds

The name comes from the old French word ‘esmeralde,’ which is a derivative of the Greek word ‘smaragdos,’ simply meaning ‘green stone.’ The rich and magnificent green of the emerald has been thought to convey harmony, nature, beauty and love. It is often associated with Springtime, resurgence and re-growth.

Where To Find Beautiful Emeralds

Colombia is the most widely known source for the highly desirable dark green emerald, although the stones can be found in and mined from many places around the globe including Africa and across Europe. However, probably the oldest known emerald finds were once made near the Red Sea in Egypt.

Find your own “enviable emerald” much closer to home at the Diamond and Jewelry Gallery Studio City, California. The stunning showroom offers its clients stunning emerald jewelry designed to fit a range of fine jewelry budgets from large to small. Voted “Favorite Jewelry Store” by the Los Angeles Daily News, the Diamond and Jewelry Gallery Studio City carries one the largest selections of precious colored stones and EGL & GIA certified diamonds anywhere – often at more than 50-75% below retail. The store also guarantees their stones to be “conflict-free,” which is increasingly important to today’s consumers.
