“Playing Hard To Get:” Elusive Tanzanite Jewelry

December 22nd, 2014

2014, Diamond and Jewelry Gallery, pic, tanzanite necklace, approved

Though it forms deep in the earth over millions of years, brilliantly beautiful blue tanzanite was only discovered as recently as 1967. And like many ingénues, tanzanite is a gemstone that can afford to play hard to get. The reason why is its very limited availability. Tanzanite is found in only one place in the entire world: the African nation of Tanzania. On Mount Kilimanjaro.

What is Tanzanite?

With its teasing hints of purple, tanzanite is the blue colored member of a pedigreed family of gemstones known as zoisites. Interestingly, upon the discovery of so-called “blue zoisites” in 1967, it was thought that the name “zoisite” sounded too much like the word “suicide” in English. It was therefore decided to name the tanzanite after its exclusive Tanzania location.

The name was actually first proposed by Tiffany in New York. Later, in 1969, Tiffany was also the first to market the rare gems to the public. Tanzanites have remained one of the most sought after colored gemstones since that time.

The gem is found in color tones ranging from an ultramarine blue to a light violet-blue to purple. The most desired tanzanites are those with deep rich hues that are delicately infused with purple. Tanzanites with multiple colors are also quite common; with the stones often appearing with tinges of blue, purple or brownish-yellow depending on the viewing angle.

The Meaning of Tanzanites

Tanzanite is the enviable birthstone for those born in the month of December. Along with the other similarly-hued December birthstones of turquoise and blue topaz, tanzanite is thought to represent a contented life filled with the promise of good fortune.

Tanzanite, like the continent of its origin, is a gem with a rich history of story. In African folklore, the gem is thought to relax the tension of “Type-A” personalities and those under extreme pressure for long periods of time.

Tanzanite is also believed to restore or elevate the mood of those who wear it, bringing them in harmony with others around them.

Many espouse tanzanite with having actual physical benefits including: helping the body with the intake of zinc; regaining consciousness; toxin elimination and the clearing of skin disorders. The gem is also thought to be able to stimulate both the mind and the heart, and to ease ones’ blood pressure.

Famous Tanzanites In History

Tanzanites enjoy an audience of worldwide admirers. A few of the unusual gems have made the list of top tier tanzanites, standing head and shoulders above the rest:

The “Queen of Kilimanjaro”

Weighing over 240 carats, the most famous tanzanite has a name as impressive as its size. Known as the “Queen of Kilimanjaro,” the show-stopping gem was used as the centerpiece of a show-stopping tiara encrusted with diamonds and garnets. This exotic tiara is on museum display in Ontario, Canada, at the Royal Ontario Museum.

Bragging Rights

The largest Tanzanite stone ever mined was over 737 carats. If size matters, this beauty of a stone surely takes the prize.

Tanzanite Pricing – No Cheap Date

The high end pricing of tazanites reflects not only the extravagant coloring of this unique gemstone, but also its quite limited availability. Because of their unusual color, tanzanites are thought to make a particular statement about the wearer, thus increasing their value and desirability.

While tanzanites are both prized and priced for their scarcity, at the Diamond & Jewelry Gallery, we carry the largest selection of precious colored stones and EGL & GIA certified diamonds and jewelry anywhere – often more than 50% to 70% below retail.

“Fluid Beauty:” The Storied Aquamarine Gemstone

December 18th, 2014

2014, Diamond and Jewelry gallery, pic, huge aquamarine ring, approved

Named sometime in the 18th century, aquamarine means “water of the sea.” This highly sought-after gem is the official birthstone for those with March birthdates. It also reigns as one of the most prized offerings in the vibrant, rainbow spectrum of precious colored stones.

These fluid beauties are found in hues ranging from very pale blue to dark blue-greens. They can be found in quite large sizes and usually have excellent clarity.

Though they are often confused with blue topaz, the two are not at all the same. Aquamarines are actually much more valuable due to the fact that their deeply calming azure color is naturally occurring. Blue topaz, however, is created by treating colorless topaz with radiation.

The Meaning of Aquamarines

The aquamarine possesses a storied history as endlessly rich as the stones themselves. Aquamarines are said to symbolize eternal youth and happiness. Historically, they were thought to possess powers far beyond that of their stunning beauty. According to legend, aquamarine gems encourage prosperity in mental and physical health.

It has also been said that the aquamarine protects those who wear it from harm. In fact, ancient sailors believed that the gem held powers that could ward off maritime disasters. The sparkling, crystalline gem was also thought to be the bounty of elusive mermaids.

Where Do Aquamarines Come From?

Aquamarine is mined in Brazil, throughout Africa and Asia, and in Colorado, where it acts as the state gemstone. In Brazil, they are found most in the Santa Maria de Itabira mine in Brazil. Richly colored aquamarines also occur in African countries including Mozambique, Nigeria, Zambia, Namibia, and Zimbabwe. Distinguished aquamarines of African origin are labeled “Santa Maria Africana.”

Aquamarines Famous in History

Aquamarines have inspired the creativity and imagination and powered the envy and lust of people and cultures since their discovery. Here are a few A-List aquamarines:

The Hirsch Aquamarine

The Hirsch Aquamarine is a huge, fancy, emerald-cut gem, at 109.92 carats. It is completely free of any treatments and 100% natural, which is common to aquamarines. The House of Louis XV rendered the deeply rich, sea blue stone into an exquisite pendant by surrounding the precious gem with 118 diamonds set in 18K white gold.

The Queen’s Gems

Queen Elizabeth II owns some of the most famous aquamarines. At her coronation in 1953, she was gifted with a sparkling aquamarine necklace and pair of earrings by the Brazilian president. She has since added a bracelet, brooch and tiara to her royal aquamarine collection.

Size Matters

A 911 carat aquamarine, again from Brazil, is displayed in the Smithsonian museum in Washington DC in the Hall of Gems alongside other famous stones such as the Hope Diamond.

Another show-stopper known for its size is the “Dom Pedro” aquamarine. It weighed 26 Kg and was cut in 1992. It remains as the largest aquamarine ever cut.

Our Featured Piece*
(Pictured above. *Subject to sale or prior sale.)

Create your own place in fine jewelry history with a piece like the beautiful “Masterpiece Aquamarine.” This rare piece features an 18.36 cts, center emerald cut aquamarine in the deepest blue. Set in 14k white gold, the finely cut large stone is surrounded by 24 sparkling round cut diamonds (2.50 cts). The stunning gem is thought to originate from the Santa Maria mine in Brazil, the aquamarine capital of the world.

Find stunning aquamarines like this one and many others to fit every style and budget at the Diamond & Jewelry Gallery in Studio City, California. We carry the largest selection of precious colored stones and EGL & GIA certified diamonds and jewelry anywhere – often more than 50% to 70% below retail.

Stop in anytime to see our beautiful selection of twinkling aquamarines. And while you don’t have to be a sailor to wear these gems inspired by the color of the sea, an aquamarine from the Diamond & Jewelry Gallery is guaranteed to make some waves!

Warrior Gemstone: The Invincible, Unconquerable Diamond

December 15th, 2014

2014, Diamond and Jewelry Gallery, pic, horizontal multi rings

In the world of gemstones, the diamond is esteemed for its exceptional beauty and brilliance. But, did you know that the diamond also has a storied history as a “warrior gemstone?” Their use as an ancient “tool of battle” is lesser known trivia about this precious gemstone.

Originally discovered more than 6,000 years ago in India, diamonds were immediately prized for their extreme durability and hardness and were often used as implements or tools for cutting other materials. Ancient people also came to believe that diamonds were imbued with mystical properties and used them more creatively.

Invincible, Unconquerable Diamonds

The name given to the rare gems gives us an idea of how early peoples viewed and valued them. The term diamond originates from the Greek word “adamas,” which itself means ”invincible” or “unconquerable.” Because of their rarity, diamonds were thought to imbue their wearers with special powers. Thusly, diamonds were often worn in battle to ensure a victorious outcome.

Amazingly, the sparkling gems were also used as a type of weapon. For example, some held beliefs that placing them in the mouth could bring about the loss of teeth; or that grinding a diamond into a fine powder could turn it into a potent poison with the potential to damage victims internally. Ouch!

Born To Shine – The Diamond Birthstone

For those lucky enough to be born in April, the diamond is their traditional birthstone. The stunning gem is thought to imbue wearers with improved relationships, increased strength and benefits such as balance, clarity and abundance. The diamond is also symbolic of lasting, eternal love.

If you’re in the market for a diamond, you’re probably planning to use it as a stunning new addition to your jewelry collection instead of a weapon. When you’re ready, visit the Diamond & Jewelry Gallery in Studio City, CA. We carry the largest selection of EGL & GIA certified diamonds and jewelry anywhere – often more than 50% to 70% below retail.

On sale at the Diamond and Jewelry Gallery right now, gifts for every size budget. Choose from thousands of pieces; including sparkling diamond necklaces from $398; “Three Stone Past, Present and Future” diamond or Halo pendants from $285; spectacular diamond earrings and pendants from $685; one carat round brilliant cut diamond gold solitaire rings at just $895, and much more!

Our diamonds are selected to sparkle for a lifetime. And while you don’t have to be a warrior to wear one, we guarantee that wearing our diamonds will make you fierce!

Fancy Colored Diamonds: The “It” Gems

December 15th, 2014

2014, diamond and jewelry gallery, pic, yellow diamond rectangle ring

Beautifully brilliant diamonds form naturally, over millions of years, in every color of the most vibrantly hued rainbow. But, when it comes to popularity, the stones that often get the most attention are usually white diamonds – those with no color at all. That may be changing. Fast.

Fancy Colored Diamonds – “The It Gems”

Fancy colored diamonds are fast becoming the new “it gems,” sought after not only for their intensely unusual beauty, but also for their extreme rarity. So, what are they and why are they so rare?

Even in the lightest tones and low saturation, any stone showing color in what’s called the face-up position qualifies as a fancy color diamond. Only one in every 10,000 diamonds possesses natural color vibrant enough to be classified as fancy color diamonds.

The Bold and The Beautiful

Offered up in blues, greens, pinks, oranges, reds and yellows – bold and beautiful fancy colored gems are not at all for fine jewelry wallflowers.

More often than not, these richly hued gems are purchased and appreciated for their intensity and distribution of color. Different than when shopping for a white or colorless diamond, considerations such as cut and clarity are less important when purchasing a fancy color diamond. In this market, the bolder and more intensely colored the stone is, the more valuable it is.

More and more purchasers are looking to add depth to the color palette of their jewelry collection. And retailers and auctioneers are paying attention, adding a vibrant range of hued diamonds to their offerings.

Sky Is The Limit

While all diamonds are beautiful, naturally occurring fancy colored diamonds are much more rare, and therefore, much more expensive. And for traders, they’re getting harder and harder to find.

All these factors – the combination of their rarity in nature and dissipation in sourcing – eventually add up, making fancy coloreds much more costly than their blanche counterparts. Some experts quote the sought after gems as being 10 to 20 times the price of a similar quality white diamond.

For those looking to shave down the price of a colored diamond, also available are beautifully hued diamonds that originate from treatments as opposed to nature. These enhanced colored diamonds are often priced as much as ten times lower than those that occur naturally.

Rock Stars

While their popularity and price have increased recently, interest in the showy stones is nothing new. There are many, but here are a few classic examples of fancy colored diamonds that have achieved “Rock Star” status:

The Classic Hope Diamond

One of the largest dark blue diamonds ever found, the Hope Diamond holds court as fine jewelry royalty. The 45.52 carat diamond is housed at the Harry Winston Gallery of the Smithsonian’s Geology, Gems and Minerals exhibition.

In the pendant surrounding the Hope Diamond are 16 white diamonds, both pear-shapes and cushion cuts. The necklace chain contains 45 white diamonds. It is perhaps the most visited museum object in the world.

Epic A-List

In November 2013, Christie’s Geneva sold a 14.82 carat, pear-shaped, vivid orange diamond for $35,540,612. The sale of the show-stopping piece set a world record price for an orange diamond.

Our Featured Piece

You can achieve your own Rock Star status by adding a beautiful, fancy colored diamond to your fine jewelry collection. Featured exclusively at the Studio City, California, showroom of the Diamond & Jewelry Gallery, this stunning18k white gold ring with 22k setting features a brilliant fancy yellow rectangle cut diamond surrounded by dozens of complimentary round cut yellow diamonds.

At the Diamond & Jewelry Gallery, we carry the largest selection of precious colored stones and EGL & GIA certified diamonds and jewelry anywhere – often more than 50% to 70% below retail.

Stop in to see this beautiful, yellow diamond show stopper or any of thousands of other offerings. And get ready to steal the show!
